BRIAN KUHLMANN

Brian Kuhlmann is a Santa Barbara–based artist whose photographic work explores

our relationship with the natural world. For more than four decades, his practice

has been shaped by curiosity, observation, and a fascination with what reveales

itself when we slow down and pay attention.

His subjects have evolved over time, but the impulse remains remarkably consitent. Ancient trees, disappearing landscapes, the night sky, and, more 

recently, wild horses all become opportunities to look beyond the immediately 

visible-to consider time, resilience, freedom, beauty, and our place within the natural world.

​

His long-running collaborative project, Song of Absolution, began more than

twenty years ago as an exploration of trees as individuals rather than lanscape.

Photographed around the world and printed by hand on kraft paper, the work has grown into an ongoing archive of trees and the environments they inhabit.

​

Other bodies of work extend that same curiosity into remote landscapes and the night sky, where long exposures reveal a world beyond ordinary human perception.

His newest photographs of wild horses emerged from an unexpected encounter with their movement, presence, and freedom-a subject he is only beginning to explore.
